Crypto card rewards or cash back? Run your own $2,000 comparison

A spending example shows how category caps, token prices and interest can erase an attractive rewards headline.

Receiving crypto for purchases can add to a holding without a separate buy order. The important comparison is the reward earned on spending you already planned, against an available cash-back alternative, after costs. Increasing spending to earn tokens changes the calculation entirely.

Gemini's US credit card provides a worked example. Its support page says the card is unavailable outside the United States; approval and other conditions apply. This is not an India-accessible card recommendation, an affiliate offer or an instruction to apply. The comparison method also works for a locally available card.

Calculate the ordinary rewards, not a promotion

Gemini's reward-tier page, checked on 13 October 2026, lists 4% for qualifying gas, EV charging, transit, taxis and rideshare; 3% dining; 2% groceries; and 1% other qualifying purchases. The 4% category is capped at $300 of spending per calendar month, with 1% thereafter.

These tiers depend on the merchant's payment classification. Buying groceries at a store not classified as an eligible grocery merchant may earn only 1%. Temporary merchant offers, old holiday promotions and referrals are excluded from this example.

Suppose a month contains the following eligible spending:

Planned spendingAmountIllustrative rewards using listed tiers
Eligible 4% transport category$300$12
Dining$300$9
Groceries$600$12
Other qualifying purchases$800$8
Total$2,000$41

A hypothetical flat 2% cash-back card on the same $2,000 earns $40. The crypto card's advantage is $1 before any differences in fees or redemption. The cash-back card is a comparison scenario, not a verified product available to everyone.

If the $600 grocery spending receives only 1% because of merchant classification, the crypto reward falls by $6 to $35. Category accuracy matters more than a glamorous headline in this budget.

What happens above the cap?

Change the month to $600 in qualifying transport, $300 dining, $600 groceries and $500 other spending. Total spending stays $2,000.

Transport earns $12 on the first $300 and $3 on the next $300. Adding $9 dining, $12 groceries and $5 other rewards gives $41 again. Applying 4% to all $600 would incorrectly show $24 for transport and overstate total rewards by $9.

Check whether a cap applies across grouped categories, how returns affect rewards and when a new spending period begins. A card can describe a high rate accurately while a reader's estimate is still wrong.

Receiving tokens creates a second investment decision

The rewards agreement says rewards are converted into the selected digital asset and remain subject to market fluctuations. If the example's $41 of crypto later falls 30% in dollar value, it is worth $28.70 before sale costs. A 30% increase would make it $53.30. Neither movement changes the original $2,000 spent.

Against $40 held as cash, the later values differ sharply. Those are hypothetical token moves, not forecasts or measured Gemini customer outcomes. Holding rewards is an investment choice made after the spending reward is calculated.

Selling immediately can reduce the time exposed to price changes, but trading spreads, fees, settlement and minimums can reduce realized cash. Delaying sales reduces the number of transactions while leaving more rewards exposed. A card reward is therefore not automatically spendable dollars at its original displayed value.

Interest overwhelms small differences

In a separate illustration, carrying a $2,000 balance at a hypothetical 24% annual interest rate for roughly one month costs about $40 using a simple rate-divided-by-twelve approximation. Actual card interest depends on daily balances, the contract and any grace period; 24% is not a quote for this card.

That approximate interest consumes almost all the example's $41 reward. An extra $100 purchase solely to receive a 3% reward spends $100 to gain $3; it does not make $3 of net income.

Compare annual fees, foreign-currency charges and your actual ability to pay the bill as well as the reward table. We do not treat credit as investment capital or recommend borrowing to accumulate tokens.

Your next action

Use three recent months of actual spending and classify each merchant conservatively. Apply caps, compare a cash alternative, then subtract your expected conversion and account costs. Keep rewards and any later token sales in your records; tax treatment varies by country and event.

If crypto rewards win only when you assume their price rises, you have identified a price bet rather than a stronger spending reward. Separate the two decisions before choosing a card or a rewards currency.

Sources and update policy

Primary sources checked 13 October 2026: Gemini reward tiers and category limits, rewards agreement dated 4 March 2026, and regional eligibility. Eligibility page is used for regional scope, not its older reward summary. All spending and price-change examples are hypothetical. Recheck terms before publication and monthly thereafter; remove expired promotions rather than rolling them forward.
