# Your portfolio value is a display, not a guaranteed sale price

A portfolio display estimates value. What you would receive from selling depends on the actual route, available market and costs. Keep the screen total separate from a realizable cash amount.

## Ask what price the display uses

An app may calculate value using a reference price. Investigate whether that price comes from the market where you would sell, when it was updated and whether there is enough activity for your intended amount. The display itself does not answer those questions.

This distinction matters for unfamiliar or thinly traded assets. A quoted price multiplied by your holdings can look precise even when the whole amount cannot be sold at that price.

## Two reasons a quote can change

Uniswap Labs defines price impact as a change caused by your own trade. Slippage is the difference between an expected price and the actual result. These describe different effects. Neither term means that the value on a portfolio screen is guaranteed.

For a sale, use the current preview or executable quote for the actual amount. A tiny quoted trade does not establish the result for a much larger one. Market conditions and transaction timing can also change a quote before execution.

This guide does not recommend a trading strategy, a slippage setting or an asset. Raising a tolerance simply to make a transaction succeed should not be confused with receiving an acceptable price.

## A hypothetical cash bridge

Imagine an app showing $2,000\. An actual sale preview produces $1,940 after its stated trading costs, and a later cash-out step costs $10\. The planned bank amount would be $1,930 if the quoted steps completed on those terms. These invented numbers demonstrate the difference; they are not an observed market quote or forecast.

Before calculating, check which costs the preview already includes. Do not deduct a fee twice. Keep taxes separate, and do not assume the displayed difference is a deductible loss in your jurisdiction.

## Keep three figures in your notes

- **Displayed value:** the app’s estimate, with its time and basis if available.
- **Current sale quote:** what the actual route offers for your amount, and which costs are included.
- **Expected available cash:** what remains after any additional exit costs and access conditions.

Even the third figure is a plan until the sale and cash withdrawal complete. If you cannot obtain a credible quote or supported exit route, record the result as unknown rather than converting a screen total into a spending budget.

## Your next action

For any balance you are relying on for a future payment, identify a supported sale and withdrawal route and read its preview without executing a trade. Save the quote’s timestamp and limitations privately. Decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable before relying on that amount.
