Closing a website or disconnecting a wallet is not the same as cancelling permission for a contract to move tokens. Understand which permission you granted before assuming access has ended.

## Two different kinds of permission

A wallet connection allows an app to interact with the wallet in defined ways. A token approval, also called an allowance, can authorize a smart contract to move specified tokens. A smart contract is software running on a blockchain; the permission is about what that software may do with the relevant asset.

MetaMask’s documentation explicitly distinguishes disconnecting an app from revoking an allowance. Disconnecting alone does not revoke the existing token approval.

Wallets, networks and asset types vary. This article explains a common token-approval distinction, not every permission system or a complete recovery procedure.

## Read the request, not just the button label

Before approving, identify the app and exact website, asset, spender and amount. The spender is the address authorized to use the tokens. Ask whether the requested permission matches the action you intended.

An allowance larger than your intended transaction creates a broader permission to consider. Do not approve just because the interface says a step is required. If you cannot explain what the request does, reject or pause it and read the official documentation.

A request to sign also deserves attention. Do not assume every signature is harmless or equivalent to logging in. This guide does not decode an individual signature or confirm that a particular contract is safe.

## Make a permission inventory

Keep a private note of the network, token, app, spender and scope you authorized. Use the wallet’s official documentation to find a supported way to review existing allowances. Prefer independently verified routes; fake approval-checking or recovery sites can create another risk.

Do not enter recovery words to inspect permissions. We offer no wallet connection or approval service and cannot see your live wallet state.

## Revocation has limits

MetaMask describes methods for submitting allowance-revocation transactions. The available tools, networks and costs vary. Cancelling an allowance does not reverse transfers already completed, and reviewing one permission does not prove the entire wallet is safe.

If keys or recovery material are exposed, that is a different problem from an unwanted allowance. Follow the exact wallet’s official compromised-wallet guidance instead of assuming that disconnecting a site resolves everything.

A visual “disconnected” status is therefore useful evidence about the connection, not a blanket certificate about every prior authorization.

## Your next action

Before your next interaction, write down the permission being requested in plain language: “This lets \_\_\_ move \_\_\_ up to \_\_\_ on \_\_\_.” If you cannot fill those fields from the request and official documentation, stop before approving.
